Candy Abbott *
Publisher
FruitBearer Publishing
http://www.fruitbearer.com
www.GavinGoodfellow.com
More than
twenty years ago, after Candy Abbott’s initial response of, “Who, me?
Write a book?”, she accepted God’s call and embarked on a remarkable
journey to write and publish. Her non-fiction book,
Fruitbearer, What Can I Do For You,
Lord?, is in its third edition; her first young adult novel,
Gavin Goodfellow: The Lure of Burnt Swamp,
was
released in 2007; and her independent publishing company, Fruitbearer
Publishing, serves as a friendly starting place for budding authors. Wife,
mother, grandmom, author, speaker, publisher, and director of Delmarva
Christian Writers’ Fellowship, Candy’s heart cry is for the Holy Spirit to
use her to inspire and equip believers to fan their gifts and callings
into flame.

One-on-One Appointments
Editorial Needs
One of our areas
of interest is health-related books. We recently did a book on runaway
blood sugar that is doing quite well. We try to look for trends, but not
too narrow. We usually avoid niches, as a rule. We are looking for
authors who are aware of what is interesting in the secular world but
who have a passion for sharing that Jesus Christ is the answer to every
human need.
In fiction, we are
looking for historical romance. As a rule we aren’t looking for science
fiction, fantasy, or young adult fiction. We are a conservative CBA
house, so we also generally stay away from dark or edgy fiction.
Overworked topics -
“Mom” books, though even
here if there is a fresh approach we would be interested. The majority
of our audience are wives and mothers. We just don’t want to see typical
proposals. Same with marriage and parenting.

from the University of Maine and has published several children's books
and short stories.
One-on-One Appointments
Editorial Needs
Looking
for commercial women's fiction, urban fiction, good romantic comedy.
For nonfiction: humor, inspiration, devotionals, and targeted self
help like personal finance, dieting, smoking, etc. Also writers with
a gentle way with the spiritual disciplines.
I hesitate to say anything is overworked.
Sometimes it's just finding the person who has the right voice. I'm
kind of full up on historical and contemporary romance at present, so
it would be some time before I could look at any of those proposals.
We're also looking for teen fiction and
nonfiction--that is a different editor, but I keep my eyes and ears
open for her when I travel, in case there is something worth bringing
back to her.

First Church of the Nazarene, in Harrisonburg, VA. Still a freelance

Teens Write! (Thursday afternoon)
Paid Critiques - nonfiction books for
adults and teens
One-on-One Appointments
Editorial Needs
Barefoot's needs: In books, looking for unique ideas in the
areas of spiritual formation and discipleship. Looking for books to help
youth and young adults anchor their faith and understand the depth of
the Scriptures in their Christian walk. For Credo Magazine, looking for
fiction and nonfiction stories or column ideas in the 500-800 word
length that help teens deal with Christianity as a daily lifestyle.
Barefoot's don't needs: In books, we don't do
fiction books, just short fiction in our magazine. So don't send us
fiction. We won't even consider it. We don't need anything in the area
of purity and sexual abstinence. And we aren't looking for collected
Bible studies, poetry, or daily devotions.
Beacon Hill's needs: In books looking for proposals
in the areas of ministry/pastoral helps, felt needs/everyday living, and
women's interests.
Beacon Hill's don't needs: Not looking for any
fiction, biographies, devotionals, or marriage and parenting books.
Specific overdone topics that Beacon's not looking for are recovery from
abuse or dealing with divorce.

David Webb
Executive Editor,
Fiction
B & H Publishing Group
David Webb is the executive editor of
fiction at B&H Publishing. He managed the editorial teams at Multnomah and
Regal Books before joining B&H in 2005. Before publishing, he chaired an
accredited film education and writing program in Los Angeles. Fun fact:
Dr. Laura Schlessinger taught for him at the school before she became a
nationally recognized broadcaster and best-selling author. Now that he
thinks of it, a number of people who worked for him then have, before and
since, earned several Hugo awards, Nebula awards, Edgars, and Emmys. Guest
speakers at the popular film class David taught have gone on to win
multiple Academy Awards. Makes you wonder what he's been busy doing for
the past fifteen years. Suffice to say he knows a good thing when he sees
it. Today, he is busy scouring the globe for the best in popular Christian
fiction, including contemporary women's novels, suspense, romance,
historical fiction, and thrillers.

A
daughter of American missionaries, Jeanette grew up in the jungles and
small towns of Colombia, now guerrilla hot zones. In 1985, Jeanette and
her husband moved to Bolivia to work with an interdenominational Christian
mission organization where she worked with women and children at risk.
Jeanette began her publishing/writing career producing
Spanish-language educational and inspirational material for women and
children at risk as well as writing articles for a variety of
international publications. Her first book, a children's novel based on
her own experiences growing up in South America, was published in 1991.
This was followed over the next years by seven more children's books,
including the six books of the Parker Twins Adventure Series, a young
adult mystery/suspense series set in a multi-cultural background.
Her first major adult fiction release, CrossFire, a
630-page political/suspense novel set in the counter-narcotics war in
Bolivia, was released in July 2000. A teen novel, Jana’s Journal,
and a second adult political/suspense novel, The DMZ, set in the
guerrilla warfare in Colombia, were released in spring of 2002.

From Steve
Barclift, Managing Editor: "We're always looking for top-notch fiction (YA

beginning to publish Bible studies, so will be looking for more of those.
We continue to publish resources for pastors. Actually, anything that
catches your fancy is something we are willing to look at,
Jeanette. I guess the one qualification I should make is that we really
aren't looking for picture books unless the author also is an illustrator
(a very good one). The children's market is soft." |

English Mountain Press publishes ebooks exclusively and
promotes authors online. EMP partners with authors to produce and
copublish a limited number of nonfiction titles that are marketed through
high traffic Web sites and its own ebook store. Our titles meet the needs
of women and families in particular. Occasionally we publish a general
interest book (but no fiction). We are most interested in authors who:
have established online ministries; are launching a ministry to women;
and/or who have a growing email contact base of at least 1,000 to start
co-marketing the book with us. EMP’s decision to publish a work is based
on online marketability and the author’s willingness to aggressively
market the book with us. We seek authors who understand that to be
successful, authoring/marketing a book means you’re running a small
business. A new media frontrunner, EMP webcasts authors through
www.ChristianConferenceOnline.com
and promotes authors through
christianauthor.tv (in production) and
