Workshop 1: Are Your Characters Real Enough for Facebook?  - Barb Haley (1:00 -1:45 p.m.)

Just how well do you know your characters? Think they’re ready  to meet the world? What would your friends think of them? What sort of pictures would you find in their photo albums? Join us for a challenging session of Teens Write as we learn to create and develop intriguing, believable characters. You won’t want to miss this class—it’s information you can use immediately, no matter what you’re writing!

Barb lives in San Antonio, Texas, where she enjoys writing, playing the piano, scrapbooking, and spending time with her family. She’s the author of three juvenile fiction books: The Purple Heart, Boot Camp, and The Singing Soldiers, as well as numerous articles and stories in magazines and anthologies.

 BREAK: 15 MINUTES

Workshop 2: Making a Scene - Tim Shoemaker (2:00 - 2:45 p.m.)

Learn to really make a scene . . . in your story that is. Discover techniques to strengthen your story, one scene at a time.

Tim is the dad of three grown boys. He is the author of seven books, including Smashed Tomatoes, Bottle Rockets…and Other Outdoor Devotionals You Can Do With Your Kids, Mashed Potatoes, Paint Balls…and Other Indoor/Outdoor Devotionals You Can Do With Your Kids, Bashed Burritos, Green Eggs…and Other Indoor/Outdoor Devotionals You Can Do With Your Kids, Reboot Your Brain…Byte Sized Devotions for Boys, and Dangerous Devotions for Guys. A former “one hour photo” lab owner, Tim now writes and speaks full time. He has a passion to help boys grow to be men of God. Tim lives in Illinois with his wife.

BREAK: 15 MINUTES

Workshop 3: Dialogue that Works (3:00 - 3:45 p.m.)

Dialogue is nothing more than having a conversation. How hard can that be? Well, it depends on which character you’re talking to. Let’s discuss common mistakes we make writing dialogue and learn how to avoid them.  And at the same time we’ll learn how to use dialogue to build our characters and expand their traits.

“Yo G, it is, what it is!”
“I beg your pardon. Do you happen to be addressing me?”
“Neener, neener, I don’t mess up!”
“Cool, that sounds like a plan, dude.”
“Well bless your li’l heart.”

How many people do you hear talking here? Come meet them!

My son attended Teens Write! several years at the Colorado Christian Writers Conference.
He enjoyed the speakers and still applies much of what he learned in those sessions to his writing today.
As his English teacher in the Christian high school he attended, Teens Write! helped reinforce the writing principles I taught in class.
Because of the encouragement he received in the sessions he attended, he minored in Creative Writing in college
and completed a by-invitation-only novel writing class with Christy Award winning author, Jamie Langston Turner.
